On June 21, 2017, IWIRC New England member Sheila Smith (2015 Woman of the Year in Restructuring) who until her retirement in 2015 worked with Deloitte in multiple leadership roles during her 15 year tenure and is a seasoned restructuring and bankruptcy professional.
Sheila is a networking guru and gave everyone some great advice on marketing yourself at a networking event. Some examples of her advice—
#1 Be brief and lead with what you are there to say or convey—humor helps;
#2 Dress above the rest;
#3 Never hold a drink in the hand you shake with—or it will be cold and wet;
#4 Eat before or after the event—eating and talking is not attractive;
#5 put your name tag on the side of your lapel that you shake hands with so people can easily see it;
#6 Listen more than you talk;
#7 Be approachable;
#8 Exit the conversation gracefully by introducing them to a colleague; and
#9 Most important—follow up!
The event was well attended and a lot of fun. Thanks to Sheila Smith and all that participated!
